The fact that these two latch on to each other so quickly can be explained as a result of their circumstances up to that point. However, these are her masterpiece in my opinion. We understand why she is so socially inept and why she is unable to see the true nature of the people she has surrounded herself with. Showalter is a solid author, and has other books I have enjoyed such as most of her Atlantis series.
It is the first in the series, so it is fast paced and there seem to be many details left hanging at the end. After all, this is Maddox and Ashlyn's story, not just an installment in a series. I think most paranormal romance readers will find this story satisfying and just plain fun to read. After reading all the books in the series published so far, I can honestly say that I have not been disappointed by any of them (Although some of the eBooks and novellas connected to the series have not been to my liking). Let me begin by saying I am an avid paranormal romance reader. I have read all of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, Dark Hunter, Carpathians, Argeneau/Rogue Hunter, Midnight Breed,Darkyn, Nightwalkers, Ione's Demonica, Immortals After Dark, The Others, all Shelly Laurenston/GA Aiken, all Cynthia Eden, and many many many others (See My Listmania for more good series). That is the nature of the first book in a series. She is so innocent, it is almost unbelievable, but the author's explanation of why she is so inexperienced with people and relationships makes sense.
Ashlyn comes off as weak in a lot of ways but redeems herself by the end of the book. After so many years of loneliness, they finally make a connection to another being and simply do not let go. This series is a little jewel in this genre and I highly recommend readers to take a closer look. The story is sweet, and the action is perfectly balanced so as not to overpower the romantic element. Nevertheless, her characters call to the reader. Love grows pretty quickly from there.
That being said, I can honestly say that at the moment this is my favorite series. Meanwhile, Maddox's pain is palpable, and so is his loneliness. You can't help but want him to succeed. I absolutely love this book in particular. Maddox is truly a wonderful character.
Don't plan on reading any more of the seies. There was nothing there to keep your attention. Thought this book would be a good read based on the reviews but was disappointed. Just when the action would start and grab your attention it would end suddenly and start with a sex scene, I bought the books on audio in a combo deal.I feel like I wasted my money.
It didn't work within the previous context given to the Gods and their actions. Each warrior hosts an evil demon such as Violence, Disease, Distrust, Death, Wrath, etc. There was almost no development or progress in the fight and again I found the ending unrealistic for the characters.I will keep reading the series because I find the series idea and subplots interesting, but I hope the next book is an improvement. I cheered as Anya from The Darkest Kiss kicked Lucien's ass and took names while doing it.
All the books are based around a group of Lords, warriors who were once in good with the Gods. I was slightly more interested in the relationships, but the subplot of the war was almost entirely missing from this story. I was going to review these individually, but I thought I would go through all four in the series pretty quickly and do one big glowing review. That seemed to be true upon reading the first two books, but things slowed down for me reading book 3 (The Darkest Pleasure). The series starts off well. These demons provide the stumbling blocks in the warriors relationships with their fated women. On top of the romance there is suspenseful plot built around the premise of a group of "Hunters" who think the world would be a better place without the existence of these demons, therefore without the existence of the Lords. I rooted for Ashlyn in The Darkest Night to find her own feet and stand on them.
Book 4, The Darkest Whisper, was a disappointment to me. Their stories grabbed me and pulled me in so that I had to finish them.I wish I could say the same positive things for book 3 and 4. I found myself more interested in the subplot of the war than I was in the state of the relationships. I don't want to spoil anything so I won't go into detail but I found the ending to The Darkest Pleasure unrealistic. Hunters will do anything necessary to get their hands on the Lords of the Underworld and the series develops into a war between the two.I really enjoyed book 1 and book 2. The characters seemed to be too typical and predictable. your typical tortured warrior who finds a women he seemingly can't have.
Something about the last two books fell flat for me. The women were relatable and likable. They did something they shouldn't have and were expelled from the Gods' good graces and punished by being forced to harbor evil demons. The warriors were strong and sexy, yet vulnerable.
A fantastic series you will get immediately hooked up. I loved this book. Couldn't stop reading it until it was over.
When she enters a place she hears all conversations that have ever been said in that location. Swearing language: strong. The Greek gods were angry at the warriors and placed one demon inside each warrior. This book is about Maddox finding love with a human named Ashlyn. I generally prefer my hero or heroine to do their own neat things to solve problems. Copyright: 2008. Maddox is a warrior whose demon is violence. It was different and interesting.
I wanted some kind of "wow" factor. STORY BRIEF:This is the first book in the series about a group of immortal warriors. She is stressed because she has never had silence which she craves. But the rest of the story felt too much like other paranormal stories. Each warrior must battle the influences of his inner demon. There is a lot of potential with inner conflicts and controlling demon influences. For some reason when she is near Maddox, the voices stop.Side stories include Hunters, humans who search for and kill warriors. Centuries ago, the warriors opened Pandora's Box which caused demons to get loose.
This is the start of a series with questions to be answered in future books concerning the goddess, the Titans, the hunters and the missing Pandora's Box.DATA:Story length: 366 pages. Total number of sex scene pages: 24. Conversations and plot were ordinary. I wasn't surprised or delighted enough to give it more stars. Titan gods recently overthrew the Greek gods.
Setting: current day Budapest, Hungary. Number of sex scenes: 5. Genre: paranormal romance. Sexual language: strong. Examples of the various demons are violence, wrath, pain, promiscuity, disease, disaster, misery, lies, and defeat.
A goddess stepped in to solve some problems which seemed a little too convenient for me. The warriors don't know how this will affect them and change things.REVIEWER'S OPINION:I was intrigued with this new creature: immortal warriors inhabited by demons. Ashlyn has a psychic gift. Although warriors are immortal, they can be killed.
